Abstract:
This is a set of 152 nest record cards, filled on both sides with notes of various researchers recording ornithological data for the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. The title comes from the label on the separator in the box containing other sets of card files from the collection and from the other sets of cards. It is inferred that the field research took place in Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF), located in New Hampshire, as appears from the plots names on the cards. HBEF is operated by the USDA Forest Service since 1955, and is a member of the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) since 1988. The research concerned the black-throated blue warbler, represented by the initials "BW" on the cards. Each card shows the year ("92"), the nest number and band ID, the name and geographical location of the plot with grid coordinates, the type of plant on which nests were observed, the nest orientation and height, and observations of behavior at the nest. Charts show measurements on the birds: weight ("WT"), tarsus length ("TAR"), wing dimensions ("WNG"). Notes show the nesting behavior and the fate of each nest, dated per day of each month of the nesting season. In case of failure, the cause (such as weather or predator) is noted on some cards.
