The field book documents the field work of Richard Rathbun in Brazil while working as a geologist on the Geological Commission of Brazil, January 1877. Entries are narrative in structure. Entries contain travel details including routes, work completed, geological observations of terrain including sketches, specimens collected, and descriptions of shells observed in inland waters. Some geological descriptions are organized by numbered location. At the end of the volume is a list of expenses.
