The volume documents the work of Richard E. Grant across the United States during April 14 - May 23, 1970 and March 26 - April 20, 1973. Entries are dated, list locations, and are narrative in structure. They describe weather, travel details, expenses, location information (landmarks, distance from), observations of terrain, geological characteristics of strata, fossils present, and interactions with colleagues. Locations include Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
