The notebook documents the work of Harry S. Ladd for the U.S. Geological Survey in the Canal Zone [Panama], 1912. The volume begins with an index that lists page number and location and topic. Entries are dated and headed with location or route, followed by a narrative description of route, observations of topography, formations, sketches and geological sections with notes, fossils collected, samples taken. Details about fossils are sometimes organized by location, and described location where found. Also includes notes about rates of banana planting and names of trees.
