Abstract:
The notebook documents the work of J. Edward Hoffmeister in Vava'u [Tonga] while working for the Bernice P. Bishop Museum, 1928. He collaborated with Harry S. Ladd, then at the University of Virginia, to determine the geologic age of rocks collected. Hoffmeister discusses in detail the reasons for and the type of work conducted in the field. The volume begins with a brief report on the geological work of the Tongan Expedition. It also contains a list of subjects relating to Tonga, as well as descriptions of Vava'u. These include presence, location, and abundance of coral fossils found (sometimes specimen numbers); geological characteristics of terrain; sketches; geological sections with notes. In the back of the volume, he includes descriptions of photographs taken, listed by roll number.
