Abstract:
Mary Agnes Chase records details for her travels to Europe to collect and exchange materials and specimens for the United States Department of Agriculture. The diary is typed, and listed chronologically. She travels to herbariums across western Europe, including details about the voyage; passengers and acquaintances; interactions with colleagues; descriptions of herbariums, their condition and organization; lack of materials and current publications in herbariums and their libraries; travel by train; the lingering political, physical and economic aftermath of World War I; and personal and shared opinions on Prohibition and Woodrow Wilson. She traveled France (Paris); Austria (Vienna); Germany (Berlin, Potsdam, Munich); and Italy (Tuscany, Pisa, Brenner [Brennero]). She collects specimens with Dr. Edmund Hackel, page 54.
