Abstract:
The notebook documents H. S. Ladd's work in Fiji, 1925 - 1926. Also includes notes from work completed in State quarry [state no specified] beds during visits in March, April, and July 1924. Entries describe coral specimens found, including their color and other characteristics, geological layers (including sketch). Notes on expenses and entries are dispersed throughout the entirety of the notebook. There is a list of photographs taken (organized by roll) describing camera settings, location, elevation, subject matter and sometimes weather and date. Locations include across Oahu, Hawaii. There are lists of equipment, reading notes on coral reefs of Fiji. This is followed by journal entries for field work in Fiji in 1926. They are dated and describe routes followed, destinations, terrain observed including along rivers, sometimes elevations, weather, vegetation, types of stone observed, extended descriptions of interactions with local Fijians, specimens collected (with prov. no. #). |There is a daily log for 1925 trip to Hawaii (Oahu) where he worked with Dr. Palmer of the Bishop Museum specimen collecting and at one point investigating sand composition (presence of coral and shells found) at recently discovered sites of human remains (assumed to be traditional Hawaiian burial sites). He describes the trip to Hawaii, individuals met along way, interactions with colleagues, and personal and professional daily activities, and work completed. Notes leaving for Fiji from Hawaii for his honeymoon (some entries cover this portion of travel). At the end of his notes are a series of lists covering expenses, presents (wedding), work to complete, and to do list.
