Abstract:
This item includes landscape sketches of various locations in Pennsylvania, New York state, and New Jersey, including but not limited to Sherman Creek (Pennsylvania), Catskill Mountains (New York), and New Brunswick (New Jersey). A few landscapes seem to indicate locations in Labrador (Canada), Baltimore (Maryland), and Santiago (Chile). The Canadian and Chilean locations are questionable. Also contains Rafinesque's field notes and sketches of fish, fossils, a few insect and botanical specimen with identifications and descriptions. Measurements are recorded on many of the fish sketches. Also included are a few roughly sketched maps (these are difficult to read), and a note glued to the cover verso, dated Feb. 5, 1841, and signed by James Mease regarding the value or sale of a gold medal given to Rafinesque by the Geographic Society of Paris.
