Abstract:
The journal and notes document the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr., in Panama and Virginia (United States), 1957, 1958, 1960, 1962. 1958 notes are listed as bird notes for Darién and Panamá. They are sometimes headed with location (often name of river) and date followed by list of birds (common name) and quantities, sometimes sketches of birds with notes. Sometimes there are notes on habitat and nest, collecting method, description of specimens (including mammals).|Notes from 1960 relae to birds in Bocas del Toro (Almirante and Bocas del Drago), and list date, type (common name), and a combination notes on types observed, behavior, diet, vegetation, collecting method, abundance / rarity, quantity collected.|Next collection of notes is a combination of observations of fauna, travel notes with distances and time of day, and miscellaneous notes for periods between 1957 - 1959. There are bird lists for Robert Henderson Farm in Lancaster county, Virginia in 195 ; Cerro Azul and Mandinga 1957, 1958. |Last grouping are dated notes for travel to Giles, Russell, and Lee county in Virginia, June 18 - 27, 1962. These are headed with date and location / route. Location information is a combination of state, county, town and distance from. Entries describe travel details (route, campsites), travel with Richard and Daniel Peacock, flora and fauna observed, terrain (elevation), collecting methods, specimens collected, notes on effect of herbicide in small mammal population, references to railroad lines and route numbers, conversations with local inhabitants. There are also bird notes.
