Abstract:
This volume is a catalog of bird specimens collected on Southern Island Cruises (SIC) 1-8 on the Pacific Ocean between February 1963 and July 1965 for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program. In the volume the cruises are also referred to as ATF trips. There is a section of the field book for each cruise.Locations include Howland Island, Baker Island, Tutuila, Tongareva Atoll [Penrhyn Atoll], and islands of the Leeward Islands of Hawaii, the Line Islands, and the Tokelau Islands. SIC 8 also includes locations along a transect on the Pacific Ocean from 19°40' N, 159°23' W to 2°20' N, 174°53' W. Additional locations include other at-sea positions. Fields include field #, species, sex, location, date, gonads, weight, remarks, and collector + number. Later cruises also include the fields for type [of specimen] and stomach saved; in earlier cruises this information is sometimes recorded in the remarks field. Field numbers span from 00001 to 00202, 10001 to 10196, 40001 to 40257, 40275 to 40701, 5101 to 5281, and 5401 to 5755. Many records include what appear to be museum numbers; they are approximately in the range of 492944 and 503129, although are not in consecutive order and not all numbers within that range are included. Collectors include LNH, RSS, Woodward, FCS, RBC, and several others. A related item, Southern island cruises 1-8, 1963-1965, part 3 : SIC 7, Southern island cruises 1-8, 1963-1965, part 3 : SIC 7, in Box 200 Folder 3 of this same series (SIA RU000245), appears to be a catalog of the same specimens recorded in the ATF #7 section of this volume (field numbers 5101 to 5281). Another related item, Unidentified southern island cruise scale catalog : scales, Unidentified Southern Island Cruise scale catalog, in Box 201 Folder 6 of this same series (SIA RU000245), appears to be a catalog of bird scale specimens from the same bird specimens listed in the SIC 8 section of this volume (field numbers 5401 to 5755).
