Abstract:
The field book documents the field work of Charles O. Handley, Jr. for Arctic Operations, summer 1947. Pages of journal are numbered (1 - 100). Entries are dated and headed with locality. They cover travel from Washington DC (time of day, mode of transportation, destinations, routes), life aboard ship, weather and temperature, bird observations (type, quantity), mammal observations (type, time of day, quantity, environment), daily activity and time of day, observations of flora and fauna, terrain including terrain, weather, geology, placement of weather stations, references to photographs taken, observations of individuals with whom worked, specimens collected, specimen preparation, references to observations of the Sir John Ross and Captain Penny party campsite (part of the Franklin search group c. 1850 - 1851). Bird and mammal field notes are organized by type of bird or mammal (scientific name) followed by locality and date with description of observation, sometimes with habitat, wildlife characteristics, and sometimes collecting information and counts and time of day. Some descriptions are extensive. Includes hand drawn maps with terrain and routes indicated. Locations include Greenland (Thule), Resolute Bay, and off the coast of Canada.
