Abstract:
Diary documents travels of William Healey Dall July 14 - November 30, 1867 during the Western Union Telegraph Expedition. Entries are written on the right hand side of the book, left hand side left or sketches and maps. Includes hand drawn map of a region visited, with locations indicated in a foreign language (conceivably an Indigenous language); inventory including structures and sleds; provisions; sketches of indigenous people; list of Russian and American participants; cross sections with descriptions; sketches of Native American tools and pottery; poetry/lyrics; descriptions of insects; and mineral specimens collected and prepared. On July 24th, receives word of the American Purchase of Alaska.
