Abstract:
The journal documents Dean E. Harvey's field work as part of the African Mammal Project (Smithsonian Institution), September 19, 1966 - July 24, 1967. Pages are numbered. Entries are dated and headed with locality (country, region, sometimes distances from landmark or town). Narratives describe daily work, travel details (arrangements, campsites), collecting locations, collecting methods (type and quantity of traps), terrain including soil composition, descriptions of vegetation (including crops), specimens collected (type and quantity per day, descriptions), observed wildlife (including birds), weather and temperature (minimum and maximum), sometimes relative humidity, specimen preparation, collectors, phase of moon, and sometimes speedometer readings. Collecting locations include types of mines. At the end of the journal is a list of weather measurements per campsite along with list of quantity and types of specimens collected. These are followed by specimen totals. Locations are across Mauritania and Senegal.
