Abstract:
The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, January 2, 1897 to December 29, 1898. Entries are headed with date and include narratives detailing work completed in the office and in the field collecting fossilized plant specimens. These describe studies of collections, work completed by colleagues (various, usually refer to by last name), and visits to collecting sites. Field work entries usually begin with description of work completed, i.e. studying Tuscaloosa deposits in South Carolina discovered by Mr. Glenn. Site descriptions include landmarks and distances, geological periods, formations, terrain, layer characters and composition, types of specimens collected, campsites, and geological sections. Sites visited (including railroad cuts), ravines, and along side bodies of water. If collecting was completed in District of Columbia vicinity is described in "local field book" according to notes. Locations are across South Carolina and Kansas.
