Abstract:
The field book documents the field work of Lester F. Ward for the US Geological Survey, July 1, 1895 to December 31, 1896. Entries are dated and describe daily work completed, fossil plant collections collected (refers to other notebooks (local field books) with additional information), excursions, meetings and work with colleagues, and fossilized plant specimens (sometimes with specimen numbers). Some excursions are back to where specimens were previously collected. Indicates the notebook covers a trip to South Dakota to study cycads, Kootanie beds in Great Falls Montana, and Oroville region of California, and study in northeast United States as part of the "Island Series". These sites include the north end of Long Island including Montauk Point (New York) and Block Island (Rhode Island); as well as expedition to Kansas and Indiana territory for examining lower Cretaceous deposits. Field work descriptions include details about terrain, geological layers (color, characteristics), distances from landmarks; and types of shell, plant, and mammal fossils. Also includes contact information for colleagues.
