The field book was used for several purposes by Meek, during 1857-1859. It includes a catalog of botanical specimens collected near Owensboro, Kentucky (March 28 -November 2, 1857) including quantity, name, date, and remarks (usually with description of plant or collecting location); a description of Laramie Peak near Fort Laramie and Rawhide Butte; an account of expenses with Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden (1857-1859); and descriptions of cross sections during September 1857. Locations include the Black Hills and Old Woman's Fork of the Cheyenne River. In the back are assorted notes (including topics like Ammonites and Crustacea) and lists of contacts and a list of Paleontology books in the Smithsonian Library. Some notes are in French.
