Abstract:
The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's fieldwork in North Dakota, September 9 - November 6, 1919, as chief field naturalist for the Biological Survey. The entries are dated and describe travel from Washington, DC. Descriptions include travel details (destinations, times of day, geological landmarks), specimen collecting, photographs taken, weather, vegetation (types, including crops), and terrain. Includes work in Deadwood to inspect Roosevelt bird preserve, work with local officials. There is a hand drawn map of a field work area along the Montana / North Dakota border. Locations includes Rapid City, Roosevelt Mountain, Grand Forks, Walhalla,and Minot.
