Abstract:
Journal of a summer trip to Montana (from New Jersey) from 12 May to 22 November 1895. Howell's notes are entertaining and descriptive. He begins with birds seen and contain beautiful descriptions of surrounding landscape during travels from New Jersey to Montana. He meets with Vernon Bailey during his travels and spends the rest of the trip in Bailey's company. Collecting by Howell and Bailey occurs in several Montana localities including Saint Mary River, Koatenai [possibly the same as current day Kootenai] Mountain, and Milk River. Other localities include Grand Junction (CO), Salt Lake City (Utah), and Salmon River (state?; possibly Montana), possibly Washington, and other areas. Two lists are included towards the back of the journal: list of mammals (1-20) including genus name, sex, locality, date, and measurements; list of birds (1-15) with scientific name, sex, locality, date, and notes on eggs or sex organs. Specimens from both lists were collected in Montana from 18-25 May 1895.
