Abstract:
The journal documents Vernon Orlando Bailey's collecting of mammal, plant, and bird specimens in Arizona and Mexico, July 26 - November 14, 1889. Entries are dated and detail collecting activities and travel details. Sometimes location information is listed at the beginning of entries. Details include accommodations, travel, daily activities and time of day, distances, type and quantity of specimens collected per day, weather, temperature, sometimes barometric readings or altitudes, terrain, vegetation (types of trees), observed lava beds in Arizona, interactions with customs officials entering Mexico,and expenses. Bailey mentions working with Dr. Stejneger at Fort Huadusa (?). Locations are sometimes listed with name of ranch. Locations include Flagstaff, Arizona; O'Leary Peak; Fort Maroni (?); Santa Rita mountains; Nogales, Guaymas, Caibo, Sonora River valley, Mexico.
