Abstract:
Alexander Wetmore travels to Costa Rica in 1940-1941 to collect bird specimens for the US National Museum, and examine the biological laboratory on Barro Colorado Island and an archaeological site in Guatemala. Materials include correspondence, itemized expense records, field notes, photographs and photographic records, memorabilia, and reference materials. Correspondence (in Spanish and English) includes letters from colleagues in central America, letters detailing locations to visit (including Hacienda Santa María and Liberia in Guanacaste), and ongoing work at the Smithsonian. Correspondents include Charles G. Abbot, John Enos Graf, Frank M. Setzler, and Louise M. Pearson. 4 pages of field notes describe birds observed at Barro Colorado Island and bird lists. Photographs are captioned with country information and appear to have been taken when proceeding to Hacienda Santa Maria in Guanacaste. Subject matter includes countryside (farmland, pastures, rivers, men on horseback, valleys) in envelope with photographs is a photo list detail those enclosed and others not included in folder.
