Abstract:
Alexander Wetmore went to Arizona in 1919 to investigate the economic status of the thick-billed parrot, doves, and other birds for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Bureau of Biological Survey. Materials include a field diary, 20 May - 24 July 1919, correspondence, reports, expense books, telegrams, receipts, permits, maps (with markings), and reference materials. Notes include bird lists followed by detailed descriptions of observed bird behaviors. Entries are chronological. Correspondence cover expenses, damage to fruit from birds, and reports. Includes report The Thick billed Parrot (Rhynchopsitta pachyrhyncha) in Southern Arizona, includes edits; Damage to Wheat in Arizona by Doves, Methods of Control, 1917; report on series of interviews with people of varying backgrounds regarding observed damage of crops by doves in Maricopa County, Arizona. Observed sites include Kansas (Lawrence) and Arizona (Arlington, Palo Verde, Chiricahua Mountains, Rucker Canyon, Little Dragoon Mountains, Higley).
