Abstract:
Heinrich travels through out New Mexico to inspect the condition of the tree population. The journal is arranged by date, giving details from the time leaving Washington D.C. until his return. He provides observations and details about collecting efforts at each site, noting weather conditions, elevation, and descriptions of the environment. He also elaborates on elements of daily life on the trail: procuring supplies, meals, individuals met, and specific incidents. He specifies locations near Elk, New Mexico; Vaca Creek Canyon; Tigeras Canyon, Sierra Blanca Mountains; and Ruidoso, New Mexico, as well as providing descriptions of photographs taken and a list of the camps at the end of the notebook. Strains of poetic prose are also included.
