Abstract:
Alexander Wetmore records information about collected specimens and observations of birds in the vicinity of Independence, Kansas, December 1904 - March 1905, when he worked as an Assistant at the University of Kansas Museum. Entries are chronological and listed by date; they consist of journal style descriptions of outings to collect and observe, and lists of specimens collected per day. Specimen details include: number, name (scientific or common),collector name, location, appearance, size (with measurements), and stomach contents. Along the left-hand side of entries, Wetmore records specimen numbers and bird's names for quick reference. He discusses his method of collecting, weather, and conditions of trips. He references participation in Christmas Bird Census and Bird Lore. On page 131 there is a bird-list for February 1905. Repeated trips are made to the vicinity of Verdigris River [North Branch Verdigris River] and Elk River.
