Abstract:
Volume 71 are the journals Frank Smith and Dennis Stadel completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1964-1966. Includes a mixture of typed and hand written copies of journals. 1) is the journal and catalog of Frank Smith during the Southern Island Cruises and Lisianski Island, January 24 -October 16, 1966. Entries are dated and headed with island. Entries include details about daily activities, headings, weather, bird nesting and breeding behaviors and other wildlife, specimen collecting, bird banding, bird and nest counts, and observations of bird growth. Some observations are broken down by type of bird. Catalog includes number, type, what collected, date, collecting location, weight, measurements, molt, color, and age. Locations include Phoenix [Rawaki], Enderbury, McKean, and Howland Island. Catalog includes several additional islands. 2) are Dennis L. Stadel's journals and catalogs, for June 28, 1964 - March 11,1965. Begins with page 46. Includes observations on Oahu including bird banding on Kaneohe area Military Base. Entries detail observations of birds, nests, eggs and breeding behaviors; pictures taken; birds seen each day; daily activities; bird banding; work between participants; details from rat collecting including a rat autopsy description and trapping results; details about monkey observed [5 September 1965]; other rodent observations and collecting; and soil samples. Locations include Midway and Kure Island.
