Abstract:
Volume 64 includes multiple journals by multiple creators completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1963-1966. Journals are a mix of typed and hand written copies. 1) is the journal of Peter Marshall from Southern Island Cruise [SIC] #5, June 1 - July 25, 1964. Includes descriptions of daily activities; interactions with participants; bird observations of behaviors, characteristics; specimens collected and collecting locations; soil samples; and bird lists. Includes maps with notes. Locations include islands of Washington, Christmas [Kiritimati], Cook, Malden, Enderbury, Marshall, Starbuck, Howland, and Baker. 3) is Marshall's journal from the Leeward Hawaiian Islands, August 16-23,1964. Describes work bird banding and bird counts, and interactions with participants. Locations include Pearl and Hermes, and Lisianski. 4) is the journal of Robert W. McFarlane from Midway and Wake Islands, June 6 - July 24, 1963. Entries detail bird observations (with estimated populations) and their habitats, island terrain, vegetation, work with local officials, bird populations affecting flight routes, summary of birds present, bird banding, and detailed description of Red-tailed Tropicbird (July 1, 1963). Location includes Wilkes and Eastern. 5) is journal of McFarlane from Leeward Islands, Kure, Midway, January 22 - May 1963 on USS Moctobi. Includes descriptions of interaction with participants and military; birds, eggs and nests observed; and their habitats. Locations includes Pearl and Hermes, and Eastern Island. 6) is the journal of Richard W. Merril at sea and Leeward Islands, August 3, - September 19, 1964. Dated entries include descriptions of observed and collected shore and pelagic birds including at sea, bird banding, and observing seals. Locations include Pearl and Hermes, Lisianski. 6) is Merrill's journal of SIC #6, October 9 - November 29, 1964. Also recorded as ATF 6. Entries are dated and headed with island. Includes daily activities with participants; times of day with bird observations and other island wildlife; blood samples; and bird banding. Catalog is organized by date and island. Data includes number, sex, species, weight, size, and organ data. Collected rodents, cats, crabs, and pigs. Locations includes Howland, Baker ,Phoenix [Rawaki], Birnie, Jarvis, Christmas, Washington, and Palmyra. 7) is the journal of Merrill from SIC #7, February 1 - March 18,1965, aboard USS Hitchiti. Dated entries record daily activities with times of day, weather, specimen collecting, bird banding (including quantities), noting locations on islands by direction and geographic points, interactions with local inhabitants, and blood samples. Locations include Birnie, Enderbury,Fakaofu, Jarvis, and Christmas. 8) is journal and catalog of David Pearson for Leeward Hawaiian Islands, June 6-25, 1966. Entries are dated and detail work completed on USS Shearwater. Most entries are organized by type of bird observed. Entries include daily activities with times of day, bird population estimates, and bird species summaries. Specimen lists include number, collector, species, date, location, color, habitat, how taken, reproduction status, and molt status. Locations include Necker, Laysan, and Lisianski island.
