Abstract:
Volume 63 includes multiple journals by multiple creators completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1963-1967. Journals are a mix of typed and hand written copies. 1) is the journal and catalog of T. James Lewis, covering June 8, 1966 - August 8, 1967. Dated entries include descriptions of bird observations (behaviors, characteristics of individuals and populations), some references to bird band numbers, weather, collecting rodents, interactions with participants, and daily work. Catalog information includes USNM number, species, latitude and longitude, date, weight, collector, and sexual organ data. Locations include Oahu and Midway Islands. 2) is the list of plants collected by C. Robert Long in the Midway Island, May 22-26, 1964. Starts with list organized by island and includes scientific name. Following this are descriptions of vegetation and related birds for Midway and Eastern Island, organized into 7 geographic areas, and a note about effect of human activity. 3) is the journal and catalog for Charles Long from Southern Island Cruise [SIC] #5, June 22 - July 24,1964. The entries are dated, headed with island, and have extensive descriptions of plants (flowers, leaves, growth and abundance) and their relationship to topography and substrate (guano soil, sand/coral, sand, coral rock), as well as relationship to local bird populations. Breaks down island vegetation descriptions into sections with markers indicated, line transects, specimen collecting, and observed remains of guano operations. Includes a summary of botanical fieldwork organized by island and date range; and a addenda to the report of C.D. Hackman, for February to March ATF 1964; list of algae collected with number, collector, location description, island, and type; soil samples of Hawaiian Leeward and Oahu offshore islands listed by island, date, with codes, and location descriptions; and journal entries about Christmas Island, with a list of slides taken. Locations include Malden, Starbuck, Enderbury, Howland, Palmyra, Washington, Christmas [Kiritimati], Baker, McKean, Phoenix, Sand, and Johnston. 3) is the journal and catalog of C. Long from SIC #6, October 9 - 24, 1964. Includes descriptions of terrain, plants and lists organized by island, including collection number, species, location description with landmarks, surrounding plants, and plant descriptions, sometimes with measurements. Includes photograph list with numbers and descriptions. Locations are Howland and Mckean Island. 4) is Long's Preliminary Key and List of Vascular Plants of the Pacific Region, 1965. Includes a glossary. 5) is the journal of James P. Ludwig for Kure and Midway Islands, September 1 - December 20, 1963. Entries are dated and headed with island. Include descriptions of daily work, bird collecting and observations, bird banding activities and numbers indicating which were collected as specimens, specimen preparations (sometimes includes details such as measurements of specimens), tagging seals, procuring supplies, weather, temperature, observations of micro environments, insect and rodent collecting, and vegetation study areas. 6) is the journal of Ludwig for Main Hawaiian Islands and at sea, January 1, - April 29,1964 for Starbrite cruise. Includes descriptions of appearance, behavior and songs of birds and their habitat. Indicates locations on islands with landmarks; sometimes includes headings in entries like nest building or colony behavior. Includes preprinted observation sheets recording observer, location, time, and weather. Includes sketches. Locations are the islands of Maui, Oahu, and Kauai.
