Abstract:
Volume 60 includes multiple journals by multiple creators completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1963-1965. Journals are a mix of typed and hand written copies. 1) is the journal of Warren B. King (all field notes) December 19, 1963 - July 4,1964. Entries are dated and journal style, detailing islands visited, descriptions of vegetation and wildlife observed besides birds, weather, bird counts, bird behaviors (individual and colonies). Some entries document US FISH AND WILDLIFE SeRVICE, BUREAU OF COMMERCIAL FISHERIES [BCF] Cruise. Locations include Hawaii (Big Island), Manana Island, Midway, Kure, Kauai, and Maui. Locations are listed at the top of entries by stating island name, and specific location on island, usually, wetland area, crater or other type of geographic location. Intermixed with later dated entries are observations recorded on preprinted observation sheets that record observers, times of day, weather, date, and quantities and notes on bird types. 2) is the journal of Ralph Kirkpatrick documenting observations and collecting at sea and Sand and Johnston Island, September 29 - 1964 - January 17, 1965. Details work completed on USS Hall, names of personnel and their roles, bird banding efforts, weather, rodents collected, and blood samples taken. Entries become more succinct as dates progress. 3) are Species Accounts and Catalogues of Ralph Kirkpatrick, November 21, 1964 - March 3, 1965. Includes species list for mammals (rodents) and birds. These are headed by type of animal, and followed by date, time and description. First is for Mus Musculus (mouse) collected, including information of island, date, time, traps used, quantity, behaviors (of those marked and unmarked). Locations in the species lists include locations Howland, Sand, Johnston, Baker, McKean, Phoenix [Rawaki], Jarvis, Tokalau, and Line Island. Catalog lists USNM number, species, a series of measurements and weight, description of how the specimen was prepared, and sex. 4) is Kirkpatrick's journal from SIC #7, 1965. Entries are dated and are headed with islands visited. In first entry, states participating staff. Details time aboard the ATF Hitchiti, daily work, specimen and blood sample collecting of birds and rodents on islands, trapping methods, descriptions of vegetation, terrain and signs of human activities (ruins of buildings, (adults, nests, and eggs) with local inhabitants of islands . Includes times of day when activities completed.
