Abstract:
Volume 57 is a compilation of journals, catalogs and species accounts of work by multiple creators,completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1964-1968. Includes a mixture of typed and hand written copies. 1) is Brian A. Harrington's journal and catalogue of Southern Island Cruise [SIC] #11, January-April 1966. Includes a list of participants. Dated entries are headed with island location,and primarily cover bird observations, weather, and daily work completed. Includes bird skins catalog with BAH number, United States National Museum [USNM] number, type, sex, collector, measurements, collection method, date, latitude and longitude, colors and other physical characteristics. Locations include Islands Howland, Christmas [Kiritimati], Enderbury, Hull [Orona], and Canton. 2) is the Brain Harrington's journal for Sand and Johnston Island, March to July 1968. Entries are dated, and are often organized by times of day and related bird observations or type of bird. Relates information about birds, eggs and nests; weather; and tables of data. 3) is Brian Harrington's miscellaneous specimen catalog for 1966-1968. Data included is same as noted for catalog above. 4) are catalogs of Norman Heryford, 1965-1966. Includes collected insects. Data for insect specimens includes island, location information, number, date, type, soil temperature, and bird information if associated. Bird catalog includes varying amounts of descriptive information. Sometimes includes USNM#, type, date, island, sex, organ measurement, weight and size, and collector. 4) are David Hoff's catalogues for 1966. Includes similar information to that of catalog above, and sometimes fat content. Also includes USNM # and latitude and longitude when collecting at sea. Additional locations include islands of McKean, Phoenix [Rawaki], and Palmyra. 5) is the journal of Vincent D. Hoeman during his work in the Main Hawaiian Islands, January-May 1964. Notes participants, preparations for voyage aboard USS Energy. Spends significant time on island of Oahu observing birds. Notes personal and local reactions to news of Alaska earthquake and local tsunami warning. 6) are miscellaneous notes of Vincent Hoeman on Aleutians, May-July 1964. 7) is Hoeman's journals from the Pribilofs and Aleutians, June 1964. Includes notes on preparation of supplies and work with local agencies, interactions with locals, notes damage from earthquake, collecting, and observations. 8) is Vincent Hoeman's journal from the Main Hawaiian Islands, March-April 1965. Discusses daily work, banding birds, descriptions of islands and bird behaviors. Includes list of bird band returns. Locations include islands of Lisianski, Laysan, and Pearl and Hermes Reef,
