Abstract:
This volume contains multiple field books by multiple creators and covers field work completed for the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, 1963-1968. This includes Roger Clapp and Richard Crossin during SIC #3, 1963; Midway and Kure Islands, 1963-1964; SIC #4, 1964; Gilbert and Marshall Islands, 1964; Southern Island Cruise, 1968. Some are hand written, others are typed. All journals include lengthy journal entries including details about daily activities (sometimes with time of day), interactions between participants and additional information about birds and environments, as well as stories and anecdotes. 1) covers SIC #3, October 1 - November 23, 1963 and includes journal and catalog. Entries are dated, and include descriptions of locations on the islands along with population estimations for types of birds. Journal entries include reptile, mammal (rodent), and insect specimen data (measurements, weight, sex, description); bird, egg, and nest observations;. Locations include Islands of Baker, Howland , Phoenix [Rawaki], Enderbury, Canton. 2) includes journal and catalog for areas of Midway and Kure Islands during December 1963-1964. This portion is hand written and is headed with date and location. Entries describe observed birds' behavior, characteristics, and environment. Includes quantities and type of specimen collected by location on island. 3) covers SIC #4 during 1964 in the Hawaiian Islands, Howland, and Phoenix Group. 4) covers 1964 in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands with journal and catalog. Continues to provide descriptive information of birds, eggs and nests sometimes referring to specific birds by band number. Includes data about fish identified. 5) covers June to July of 1968 during the Southern Island Cruise. Descriptions specify locations across islands with measurements and data of birds, eggs and nests. Covers island of Mckean, Enderbury , Jarvis, Malden, and Howland. 6) includes Crossins' journal from July 1- December 12, 1965 field work. Crossin includes description of banding efforts, flock data,, observations at sea, and blood samplin.
