Abstract:
This field book documents Nelson's exploration of Amecameca, Popocatepetl, Iztaccihuatl, and Orizaba (currently known as Citlaltépetl) in Mexico between 27 December 1893 and 2 February 1894. Mexico City is also briefly noted. Nelson's daily notes are written in the narrative style and describe the flora and fauna, particularly birds and small mammals, of the areas explored. Includes some taxonomic names. Examples of specimen observed or collected include volcano rabbits, voles, coffee, tobacco, ducks, and sparrows. Descriptions of other specimen are also included. A significant portion of these notes describe the geology of mountains, particularly glaciers and boulders as seen in one of Nelson's sketches. Nelson occasionally includes weather conditions, temperatures, and elevations / altitude. Nelson occasionally describes city life and includes an anecdote about the tensions between "natives" and Americans in some areas.
