Abstract:
The diary was written by Richard F. Darsie, Jr. during the Smithsonian-Bredin Caribbean Expedition, 1959. Entries cover March 29 - May 4, 1959. Richard F. Darsie was an entomologist, specializing in the study of mosquitos, that participated in the expedition with Waldo Schmitt. Subject matter covers details about travel; daily activities; interactions and meetings with local inhabitants and colleagues working in the Caribbean and expedition participants; locations and observed mosquitos with scientific names included; outbreaks of malaria in the islands and transmission methods (includes hand drawn map); and visit to the Trinidad Virus Laboratory. For locations visited, he lists streets, rivers, bays, harbors, and beaches and includes descriptions of types of vegetation and terrain. Locations in the Caribbean include the vicinity of but not limited to Trinidad, Tobago, Martinique, Barbuda, Antigua, and Dominica.
