Abstract:
The journal documents Caleb Kennerly's observations during the Northwest Boundary Survey, 1857-1858. Entries are numbered, listed in several manners. Some are per container, in this cases, entries are written for one or group of specimens and referred to by their scientific or common names. Includes location and narrative style descriptions. Details vary but include a combination of surroundings, specimen's individual and group behaviors, what bait used, how common, measurements, how stored, and sometimes how they taste. Observed wildlife includes variety of marine and land-based (insects, shells, rodents, fish, etc.), sometimes mentioned in the same entry. Later, entries are per specimen and details are reduced to month, year, location. There appears to be more than one person recording details in the notebook. Locations mentioned are throughout coastal Washington and British Columbia, including Vancouver Island, Semiahmoo Bay, Steilacoom, Orcas Island, Chiloweyuck Depot, and Port Townsend. At the end of the notebook is a list of indigenous names of wildlife with English translations. Tribe name is not clear.
