Description:
The materials of Waldo LaSalle Schmitt include diaries, correspondence, reports, photographs, slides (color and black and white), films, and memorabilia from expeditions and fieldwork studying crustaceans and marine invertebrates along the west coast of the United States, Alaska, Central and South America, the Galapagos Islands, Africa, and Palmer Peninsula of Antarctica. Materials included come from collection divisions 7, 13, 15, and 17. Diary entries include a wide range of information depending on which division they are a part. Those from collection division 7 mostly concern appointments, United States National Museum business, museum colleagues, and contain miscellaneous jottings. Notes kept by Schmitt on expeditions are included in a few of the diaries. The notebooks contain miscellaneous material, ranging from views on politics to comments on colleagues. Most expedition information is in collection division 15. Collection division 13 deals with materials from the work of Robert A. Bartlett and the Bartlett Arctic Expeditions, 1928-1947.|Photographs and other types of images are in collection division 17. Some images are duplicated in collection division 15, thought many of the color slides appear not to be duplicates. There is extensive audiovisual documentation of expeditions. Audiovisual materials that have reference copies have been cataloged. See finding aid for list of materials without reference copies.|The collection includes typed transcripts of some portions of his diaries. These have not been included in the registry; for more details, consult the finding aid. Additional materials that are not included in the registry but relate to expeditions are either published materials or collections of images that duplicate images cataloged.
