This collection contains 238 items including diaries, itineraries, specimen lists, field correspondence, photographs, manuscripts containing field data, and maps. This record does not describe materials that do not contain natural history notes. This record also does not describe research notes, publications (or proofs for publication), correspondence not relating to field work, personal papers not containing natural history notes, and materials strictly containing military information. The field notes within this collection tend to fall into the following categories: notes from New York and the east coast United States; notes from Oregon and the Pacific Northwest; notes taken during the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey or along the Mexican boundary area; notes taken in the Mid and South West including Camp Verde (Arizona), Fort Snelling (Minnesota), Texas, and Circleville (Ohio); notes taken during Mearns's military service in the Philippines; notes taken during the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition; notes taken during the Childs Frick African Expedition; and notes taken by Edgar Mearns's son, Louis di Zerega Mearns.
