Description:
This record provides a collection level description for the field notes within the Smithsonian Institution Archives's Paul Bartsch Papers, 1901-1963. Materials that are not field notes have not been cataloged here. Please see the SIA finding aid for the full Paul Bartsch Papers under the related item portion of this record. This collection of Paul Bartsch's field notes are bound, daily field notes and focus mostly on his investigation and collecting activities regarding mollusks and birds. Notes on fish, plants, reptiles, mammals, and other specimens are included in certain notebooks. Bulk dates for these materials are 193-1938. These field notes were mostly taken in the Florida Keys and various islands in the Caribbean and West Indies including Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, and other locations. Some notes from the continental United States were taken. A summary of materials follows: bird and mollusk investigations in Haiti, Florida, the Florida Keys, and the West Indies (1912-1927); research notes taken on the Albatross Philippine Expedition (1907-1909); field notes and specimen collections made on the Tomas Barrera expedition to Cuba (1914); field notes on the Walter Rathbone Bacon Travelling [sic] Scholarship (1928-1930); notes and other materials pertaining to the Caroline describing the first Johnson-Smithsonian deep-sea expedition to the West Indies (1933); photographs of Bartsch, Carlos de la Torre, mollusks, birds, and unidentified research activities and friends on Loggerhead Key, Tortugas, Bird Key, Margarita Island, Cuba, and other islands in the Caribbean. Photographs, maps, and other materials were cataloged as field notes when they directly related to field research. Details for other materials can be found in the SIA finding aid.
