Description:
Illustration for a 1946 edition of The Complete Poems and Stories of Edgar Allan Poe, published by Knopf in New York. Cataloguing card indicates that this illustration/study was created to accompany the short story, “Metzengerstein,” originally published in 1832, which appears in Volume I on page 93. At center, a hand with veined fingers and the palm facing forward, loosely holding a broken ink pen, with black ink dripping from the tip of the pen.
