Description:
This bird’s eye view looks out onto Edo Bay from the Moto-Hachiman Shrine. Directly below is the torii, the gateway entrance to the shrine, and two prominent figures along the pathway. One figure is shown carrying a big yellow hat while the other is smoking a pipe. The path continues behind these detailed figures between the marshes and leads out beyond the bay. Further along the trail, three more distinct characters stand, surrounded by tall pines, and a lone fisherman is spotted rowing his boat through the reeds. Soon after this print was made, the land was drained for rice paddy fields and other farmland. Today it remains part of Tokyo’s Koto-Ku district.
