Description:
Album containing a series of fantastical garden vignettes framed by cartouches with chinoiserie and rococo style motifs and figures. The album contains six plates from Nouveau Cartouches Chinois (New Chinese Cartouches) and a single plate from Second Livre de Cartouche Chinois (Second Book of Chinese Cartouches) both by Gabriel Huquier after designs by Alexis Peyrotte. The sixth plate in the album is from the Second Book and has its original plate number and letter rubbed out and replaced with an inscribed number 6 and letter A in graphite. Chinoiserie is derived from the French word for Chinese (Chinois), used to describe a European style of ornament associated with the Rococo, inspired by Chinese, Japanese and other Asian artistic traditions. The plates are numbered and signed.
