Description:
Unfinished landscape sketch showing a view of the mountain Chimborazo and the volcano Carihuairazo in Ecuador, likely seen from near the town of San Juan, west of Riobamba. In the foreground, the nearby hillside, covered in a patchwork of cultivated fields, descends from right to left at lower right. The valley floor extends into the middle distance at center, while the hills on the opposite side of the valley are rendered only in graphite. In the middle distance, the terrain rises abruptly and meet the rugged furrows of Chimborazo at its base. The mountain's two peaks are rendered only in graphite. In the background at right, the volcano Carihuairazo is visible, partially covered in snow. The sky above at right is clear, while it is unrendered at left. In a diary entry from this trip, the artist notes that a thunderstorm cut him short and drove him down the hill. The blank spot at upper left may be the oncoming thunderstorm that he was unable to paint.
