David B. Mashall was born in Portland, Oregon in 1926. He was a passionate ornithologist, instrumental in creation of many of Oregon's wildlife refuges. He died at home in Lake Oswego on Nov. 22, 2011. His photographs of birds on the Hawaiian Islands are part of the records of the National Museum of Natural History (U.S.) Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program field research conducted from 1961 to 1973.
