John Edward Hoffmeister (1889 - 1991) was a geologist and paleontologist who worked in the Pacific, studying the evolution of islands. He earned an A.B. (1920) and Ph.D. in geology (1923) from Johns Hopkins University, and later became a professor of geology at the University of Rochester (1923 - 1964). He primarily worked with Harry S. Ladd studying island formation in the Pacific. Much of this work was completed in conjunction with the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Honolulu, Hawaii.
