Silas Stearns (1859-1888) joined the Warren Fish Company in Pensacola, Florida, around 1878. Beginning in 1880 he served as a special agent of the U.S. Fish Commission and U.S. Census Bureau, investigating marine industries in the Gulf of Mexico. He collected fish for the Smithsonian Institution.
