Biographical History:
William A. Oliver, Jr., was born in Columbus, Ohio, and grew up in Champaign, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Illinois and later attended Cornell University, where he earned a Masters (1950), and Doctorate in geology (1952). Oliver worked for the U.S. Geological Survey in 1957 until his retirement in 1993, specializing in the study of Silurian and Devonian rugose corals. He was also a research associate with the Paleobiology Department of the Smithsonian Institution. In 1968 he received Fulbright Award to spend a year in Czechoslovakia studying Middle Devonian corals. He was married to Johanna Kramer Oliver. Oliver passed away on October 8, after being struck by a car in Rockford, Illinois.
