Biographical History:
Prentiss, Daniel Webster was born in Washington, DC on May 21, 1843. He attended Columbian University (“received a degree of Ph.B” [Bachelor of Philosophy] in 1861, and the honorary degree of A.M. [Artium Magister] in 1864), received a degree in Medicine from University of Pennsylvania in 1864. Prentiss did his residency in quarter-master’s hospital in Washington in 1861-1864 and was acting assistant surgeon in the United States Army in 1865. He married Emilie A. Schmidt in 1864. Since 1879, he worked as a professor of Materia Medica at Columbian University. He delivered lectures at National Museum, “Hypnotism in Animals” that were subsequently published in “American Naturalist”. He compiled a list of birds in the District of Columbia in collaboration with Dr. Elliot Couess.
