F. Christian Thompson was born in 1944, and received his B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts. He conducted work with the Pacific Ocean Biological Survey Program, and went on to work for the National Museum of Natural History, Department of Entomology. His research focus for the last 50 years has been the systematics and zoogeography of flower flies (Syrphidae). Thompson serves on the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, and serves as editor of the Systema Dipterorum.
