Description:
The Smithsonian-Bredin Expedition was focused on documenting and collecting botanical and zoological specimens along the Yucatán peninsula of Mexico, and intended to help expand the presence of fauna from the region in U.S. national collections. The trip occurred from March 26 to May 3, 1960. The expedition was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Bredin of Wilmington, Delaware, and was led by Waldo L. Schmitt, head Curator of the Department of Zoology, U.S. National Museum. Also included in the expedition was E. L. Bousfield, Chief Zoologist at the National Museum of Natural Sciences of Canada. This trip was the fourth in a series of expedition sponsored by the Bredin’s around the Caribbean. Participants from the Smithsonian, University of Delaware, and National Museum of Canada in Ottawa worked aboard the schooner Blue Goose. Locations in Mexico include the vicinity of Progreso in Yucatán; Mujeres Island; Cozumel Island; and Quintana Roo.
