This round pinback button in white and teal encouraged New Yorkers to elect environmental activist Peggy Shepard for the City Council. Frustrated by how ill-served Black people were by their elected representatives, Shepard decided to run for a seat in the 1991 Democratic primary election but was defeated by councilman Stanley Michaels.
The button is among more than 200 collected by Washington, DC-based environmental justice advocate Vernice Miller-Travis.
