Cubist influences inform this abstracted view from a train exiting a tunnel. Red, orange, gray, and blue geometric forms surround the composition, suggesting movement as the train travels past underground structures and passages of light. A self-described abstract realist, local artist Jack Perlmutter was known for shooting photographs to serve as models for his paintings. It is possible that this painting was composed from the artist’s snapshots of a tunnel from DC’s railroad or early metro.
