Theodore J. Jones (1938-) combines watercolor and ink on paper in this painting reminiscent of a landscape. Red and purple outline boundaries between hill-like shapes, a broad greyish rise foregrounding a slender ribbon in mottled cream and grey. Above, inky black streaked with wispy whites and reds suggests a midnight sky. Jones hails from New Orleans where he attended Xavier University. The African American artist holds graduate degrees in art from Michigan State University and the University of Montana. Military service brought him to metropolitan Washington, DC in the early to mid-1960s, when he executed this artwork and three others in the Anacostia Community Museum’s collection (2002.0002.0010, 2002.0002.0011, 2002.0002.0012).
