Formerly in the collection of William B. Hurd (1915-2008, an employee of the Department of the Interior and other federal agencies), who purchased the jar from the Department of the Interior Indian Craft Shop (Washington, DC) in the 1930s; donated to the Indian Arts and Crafts Board by William B. Hurd in 1982; part of the IACB Headquarters collection (Department of the Interior, Washington, DC) until 2000 when it was transferred to NMAI.
